News

Well, I had my last exam at the university yesterday. Since this is my 3rd semester into the Masters Program, this means that next semester I should dedicate entirely to writing my thesis.
However, I will be doing a few other things as well:

1) I will be writing and working on my thesis, naturally.

2) I have now a job as a research assistant at the University of Groningen and will be working on that about 8 hours a week.

3) I will take one course next semester, which attracts me considerably, called "New Sounds". I don't have to take it and don't need the credits at all, but it deals with one of the topics I might work with in my forthcoming PhD studies: the acquisition of the sound system of a foreign language.

To put it short, it seems like the next semester will be quite busy! :)
Can't wait!

Saint Saëns (French composer)

Hi guys,
Here goes one more tip of the week. This time it's a piece called "Danse Macabre", which means "Macabre Dance", by French composer Saint Saëns. Saint Saëns is not a household name like Beethoven, Mozart and Tchaikovsky, but he's quite known in classical music.
This piece by him is simply amazing. In my humble opinion, the violin in this piece is the sexiest I have heard so far in any piece.
Some nice info on the piece, taken from Wikipedia:

Dance of Death, also variously called Danse Macabre (French), Dansa de la Mort (Catalan), Danza Macabra (Italian and Spanish), Dança da Morte (Portuguese), Totentanz (German), Dodendans (Dutch), is a late-medieval allegory on the universality of death: no matter one's station in life, the Dance of Death unites all. The Danse Macabre consists of the dead or personified Death summoning representatives from all walks of life to dance along to the grave, typically with a pope, emperor, king, child, and labourer. They were produced to remind people of the fragility of their lives and how vain were the glories of earthly life.[1] Its origins are postulated from illustrated sermon texts; the earliest recorded visual scheme was a now lost mural in the cemetery of the Holy Innocents in Paris dating from 1424-25.

Oh, by the way, also notice the 12 strikes of the clock before the music starts...

Copland's "Apalachian Spring"

One more beautiful piece, this time by the American composer Aaron Copland.
It's called Apalachian Spring . Can't you just hear and see the mountains? I can.
It's amazing how visual I find this piece.

Me digam se gostam!

Mais um dos grandes russos...

Me parece que o meu gosto musical de musica classica foi encomendado perto da Rússia... Gosto de sinfonias e concertos mais fortes (como a abaixo). Nao encontrei um compositor russo até agora que nao adorasse. Os favoritos até o momento: "Rachmaninov, Tchaikovsky (este desde pequeno, né mama?) e agora.... KORSAKOV. Ouçam-o abaixo:

Natal e Ano Novo

Ei galera,
Feliz 2011 pra vcs! Desejo a vcs, meus amigos, familiares e mae, um 2011 maravilhoso!
Passei o Natal aqui em Groningen, com o Yev, meu amigo de Israel. Depois fomos para Praga, para passar o Ano Novo com uns primos meus que estavam por lá. Foi super legal.
Agora estou de volta a Groningen e super ralação, cheio de projetos e provas.
Ainda por cima, consegui um emprego de assistente de pesquisa na faculdade e terei que escrever minha monografia este semestre que vem. Haja tempo! :)
Mas no final dá tudo certo.
